Kyle is a lost boy. “Freed” for his own good, he’s doing his best to follow through on promises made. But he’s struggling, there’s no doubt about it. That is, until he suddenly finds himself in a place he least expected.

Beau is an independent man, answering to no one but himself. If he’s lonely, it’s a small price to pay. That is, until a beautiful, lost young man stumbles into his bar on Valentine’s Day. He can’t turn him away. The boy needs him. Or is it the other way around?

Review:
This story seems longer than its short length thanks mainly to a situation steeped in emotion and a clever twist which I saw coming but was still enjoyable when it came. Kyle arrives in a leather bar late at night after being dumped 10 miles from his house by an irate, now ex, boyfriend. He’s nervous but has no phone or wallet so he asks to use the phone. The barman is very attractive and Kyle can’t keep his eyes off the gruff man. The attraction is mutual and although the kid isn’t his type at all, Beau the barman, can’t help but offer assistance.

The first part of this story grabs you and the emotional intensity carried me through to the end of the story. It’s difficult to write much without giving away the twist in the story but I was caught up in Kyle’s uncertainty at entering the bar and embarrassment at the situation he found himself in.

Beau is suffering from a broken heart after he split from his last lover. He’s unwillingly attracted to Kyle and I loved the little details in the writing which ramped up the lust and sexual tension he feels for Kyle. He listens in, almost reluctantly to Kyle’s story of how he arrived in the bar and is drawn to Kyle’s story.

There’s a BDSM element to the story. Kyle is submissive and has been in a BDSM relationship in the past. The sex scene between them is very tame for BDSM but contained a tenderness that I found very appealing. The ending brought a smile to my face.

Overall, if you’re looking for something very short but packed with emotion, then this would be a good story to pick up.

When University administrator Alan Castleton meets temporary worker and talented pianist Luke Milton, he doesn’t expect to become obsessed with the handsome young blond. But soon he is heavily involved in a passionate and angry affair, and exploring the dark shadows of his own personality in a way he’s never encountered before.

The more Alan tries to break free from his obsession, the deeper it entangles him. The dangerous split between his reason and his sexual desires threatens his peace of mind and, when the crisis point comes, he must decide once and for all the kind of life he should lead.

Review:
Alan meets Luke when Luke joins his university department. There’s an immediate attraction between them and despite the awkwardness of an office relationship the pair start having sex. Luke is a masochist and this calls out to something in Alan which he has tried to bury. With Luke he is given the freedom to be a sadist but at the cost of his self-respect. As his obsession deepens Alan knows he must step away before he does something he will regret.

I feel like I ought to start with a warning for this book. It reminded me a great deal of Uneven by Anah Crow, which is another book which deals frankly with a relationship between and sadist and a masochist. This book is graphic and visceral in its portrayal of a man who is used to suppressing his sadistic side and so refuses romantic relationships in favour of quick erotic encounters. Luke sees to the heart of Alan very quickly and his desperation to be hurt during sex calls to Alan and he quickly become obssessed with these violent sexual encounters with Luke. The author does a really good job of showing Alan as he starts to unravel, torn between his desire for Luke and all that it entails, and the need to control himself, to know that he is safe from what he sees as these terrible wants within him. I had a lot of sympathy for Alan.

However, because the story is so focused on Alan, we never really get to know Luke, or what Luke wants from his relationship (such as it is) with Alan. We know that he craves the violent sex and the humiliation but not whether he wishes for more with Alan. There’s a heartbreaking scene towards the end which gives us a little glimpse into Luke but not much else during the story. I understand why the author used the closed narrative of Alan only, but part of me wishes I’d seen some of Luke’s narrative too.

This isn’t a romance. The sex is not tender and romantic it’s bloody and violent with a strong dose of self loathing from Alan. It is, however, very well written and as a study of Alan, torn between desire and reason it’s well worth reading as long as you have strong stomach for the sex scenes.

— It’s clowns. It’s a gangbang. It’s helium balloons. —

Some nights just don’t go as planned. It’s Halloween and Kyle’s rushing home to see his boyfriend after a late evening shift at work. As usual, he takes a shortcut through the local park, but a poster informing about a killer clown in the area makes him apprehensive about being alone in the dark. It’s only when he discovers there is a man in a clown costume following him that he panics. Soon, it turns out his cackling shadow isn’t the only circus freak hiding in the dark, but what does a bunch of crazy clowns do when they catch you?

Review:

Warning: this book features a kidnap gangbang rape fantasy, complete with scary strangers in clown masks, humiliation, toys and bondage.

Hands down, this is one of the dirtiest stories I’ve ever read. I have a feeling it’s only likely to be picked up by those who have a taste for more extreme erotica, but just in case, please heed the warning! This isn’t for the faint-hearted.

Kyle has been with his boyfriend, Dan, for three years, and they appear to be in a solid, loving relationship. On Halloween, Kyle takes his usual shortcut home from work through the park, his head full of their evening ahead. However, he spies a poster warning of killer clowns, and then realises one is following him. Soon the park appears to be full of clowns out to get him, and he can’t outrun them all. Before he knows what’s going on, he’s surrounded and bundled into the back of a van, with five, highly aroused clowns who all seem intent on having their way with him.

Part of what makes this such a successful kidnap/rape fantasy story, is that we’re not left in doubt that Kyle is being pushed beyond his limits. Before they even get into the van he’s subtly clued in by Dan–one of his captors–and given the chance to back out if he isn’t sure. Despite his initial terror, though, as soon as Kyle realises this has been set up by his boyfriend he feels completely safe. There’s an incredibly high level of trust between the two men, and it’s clear they play regularly, although never before with this many others.

Kyle doesn’t just accept that a gangbang is about to happen; this is a long-held fantasy so he’s over the moon about it. He acts the part, though, putting up token resistance and getting slapped about and treated roughly in return. The aspect of this story that really made it stand out was how well the authors explained what Kyle was getting out of it, really making me understand his psychology:

He felt like a king. Even if he was being called names and manhandled, he still was like the most important person in the van and reveled in every second of it.

Be warned, if humiliation in BDSM stories squicks you, this is one to stay away from. Kyle is called all manner of degrading names and humiliated in other ways that are pretty amusing (I don’t want to give a spoiler here, as I’m sure it wouldn’t be a specific trigger for anyone.)

The story flows smoothly and is pretty well edited for a piece of self-published erotica. I noticed a few typos, but no more than I’ve seen in stories from other epublishers. The only thing I found disturbing on the first read through (apart from the whole clown thing, which is creepy!) was the situation Kyle is left in at the end. However, this didn’t bother me on my second read through, as I could see it was all part of the plan and he was given ample opportunity to safe word if he needed to. In fact, despite having just been used and abused by a bunch of strangers, Kyle is deliriously happy, and I felt like I could understand why.

This story won’t be for everyone, but it’s a real treat for those pervs with a stomach for this kind of twisted kink. I’m impressed at the sheer audacity of the storyline, and that K.A. Merikan has somehow made scary clowns sexy. I’ll definitely be reading more by this talented writing team!

History grad James Sheridan thinks his biggest problem in life is trying to find a suitable outfit for his upcoming Ph.D. candidacy exam. That is, until he accidentally texts a changing-room selfie meant for his fashionable sister to his ex, the domineering Professor Carson.

James and Carson haven’t seen each since James fled their power games two years ago. Back in his undergrad days, Carson was his Professor, and not just in the academic sense: a man of unusual tastes and extreme sexual demands, James had been happy to sate Carson’s savage appetites. Too happy, in fact. He never could trust himself not to let Carson push too far.

Now James is older and wiser, and sharing some seriously flirtatious vibes with a cute menswear rep. When Carson replies to James’s errant text, ready to pick up where they left off, James can’t help being drawn back into Carson’s control. It’s only when Carson suggests involving the salesman that James has to ask himself how far is too far, and whether he’s willing to go there with Carson again.

Review:
I think the blurb for this short story may end up being longer than this review so I won’t bother rehashing what the story is about.

There are a few interesting ideas in this short. Firstly there’s the relationship between Carson and James. They’ve been apart for two years, but as the story develops we gradually discover the nuances of that past relationship, how it started and what ended it. The mistaken text and following text conversations stirs up feelings in James and I liked the mix of remembered desire, love, fear and attraction shown in James as the story develops. I also enjoyed the comparisons that James makes between how he was with Carson and the older, perhaps wiser man he is now. We discover quite a lot about Carson, just through text message and James’ thoughts and recollections. It was all rather cleverly done so that by the end of the story I felt that I had a firm grounding in the basics of the relationship without ever having met Carson.

Secondly, because the story is from James’ point of view we discover quite a lot about what makes him tick. His disordered life and internal sarcastic voice was amusing and He comes across as nervy and unsure of himself which I personally found rather appealing.

Finally, the story is a hot encounter between James and Satish, the shop assistant in the store. I really enjoyed the slow build to this, with casual touches, admiring looks and conversation which was laced with promise. In fact in many ways I enjoyed the build up more than I did the sex itself. I’ve put this as an m/m/m story because Carson is very much involved in orchestrating the encounter and without his prompting, James would not have encouraged Satish.

The story ends on a bit of a crossroads. James has reconnected with Carson and there’s a probability that things will be taken further. James and Satish also have a possible future and it will be interesting to see where these authors take the story. Until then I can recommend this story to those who like a touch of BDSM to their contemporary romance.

After four hundred years as an immortal, Lukas has become bored and is dying of ennui. He wills everything he owns to his creator Gustav, with whom he’s had a three hundred years long falling out, and goes up onto the roof to meet the dawn.

Will he survive the sun? And if he does, can Gustav keep him from becoming bored again?

Review:
This story is part of a series of short stories about vampires and masked balls. The vampire in this case is Lukas who after 400 years is bored of life and decides to end it by sacrificing himself to the sun. Before he does that he bequeaths all his goods and property to his Master, Gustav, the man who made him into a vampire.

The first part of the story is engaging and I felt some sympathy for Lukas as he tries to end it all. Thwarted by the lack of sun he is then accosted by Gustav. The pair fell out centuries ago, but Gustav is not willing to let Lukas kill himself and so takes him in hand, starting with a good spanking for his bad behaviour. After that it’s typical Sean Michael fayre with a BDSM scene involving lots of spanking and a smug Dom who knows exactly what Lukas needs to overcome his boredom. The sex scene is well written, however, and I liked the way that the blood pay is used. The dynamic between the characters wasn’t anything I haven’t read before but it was still amusing to see Lukas’ attempts to fight Gustav’s attentions.

The masked ball theme is a little tacked into the story and not really relevant to the main plot, used only as a way for the characters to have a bit of cat at and mouse game.

Overall, if you like this author then this will be something familiar to add to your collection. If you like sexy vampires who engage in some D/s sex then, again this would be a pretty good story to read. For me, it was amusing enough to pass the time but nothing that will stick in my mind for long.

As the Valentine’s window display competition approaches, Trent hires Jonathan to pretty up his optical shop. Jonathan is a student from the local Arts and Design College, and he’s not shy about showing the world he’s gay. Trent hates to admit it, but guys like that make him uncomfortable. Clearly, Jonathan doesn’t care what other people think. He’s also damn good at calling a stranger’s bluff. Jonathan can tell that Trent is just like his candy-covered berries: dark chocolate on the outside, fruity on the inside. But will he discover Trent’s kinks in time for Valentine’s Day?

Review:
This valentine set romance begins with older black man Trent who owns a shop selling glasses (he may be an optician but this was never explicitly said). In order to win the annual valentine shop window display award, Trent hires Jonathan, a window dresser, to work wonders and finds the sassy Jonathan a distraction throughout his working day.

This story began well. The tone is quite lighthearted and I enjoyed the teasing way that the men dance around each other through the day. Trent seems like a bit of a lonely person and there are hints that he hasn’t had a lover for a while. There’s a fair bit of sexual tension in this first part which is tempered by an awkwardness because Trent finds the flamboyant Jonathan a little disconcerting.

Things come to a head once Jonathan completes his window display and there is an intense sex scene with a BDSM theme. To be honest, this part left me scratching my head a little as it seemed completely out of the blue. There had been no foreshadowing that either man was interested in D/s play and so I was surprised that all of a sudden they are agreeing a safe word and letting go with leather belts.

The sudden BDSM scene meant that I withdrew from the story at that point and so the end didn’t really work for me. The story ends with a reveal of the window display, which could have been quite a funny & romantic moment if I wasn’t feeling revolted that they would think it was appropriate to have spunk stains on something shown to the public. Maybe they were modelling the display on a Tracey Emin piece.

Overall, this turned out to be just an Ok story for me. I liked the older man/younger man dynamic and the early interactions between the couple but didn’t like the way the story ended.

The demon Mael has grown increasingly weary of the mortal who has bound him. And though he knows he will soon be able to complete his contract and devour the mortal’s soul, that time has not yet come. Finally, frustrated with the mortal’s limited imagination and pedestrian orders, he strikes the man unconscious and uses the small respite of freedom to summon his own demonic slave, Feng, to service his long unsated needs.

Review:

This is a very short free story which left me feeling a bit like I was dropped into a world where I should have known the characters. Mael is forced by an agreement to do/be whatever his human master wants, in exchange, Mael will get his soul. However Mael finds him repulsive and most of the things he wants are so boring to Mael who could take over the world. After a particularly distasteful evening which involves murdering a woman after sex, he knocks out his master and meets up with his submissive lover Feng in the garden.

The vast majority of the book is a sex scene between the two. Feng seems to be more wolf-like than humanoid, or perhaps one of those hybrids similar to kitsune. Mael takes note that Feng is a high-level demon in his own right who could own his own servants, but chooses instead to remain loyal to Mael. The sex is rough and demonic I suppose. Mael regrets that he’s forced to remain in his human body and unable to really let loose the way he’d like.

When his master wakes, he knows he’ll be punished for knocking the man out, but the stolen moment with Feng were worth it and Feng assures him he’ll wait for him. The ending made me snort, and it was an interesting premise, however being so short I was left a bit wondering how Mael came to hook up with the human. Yes, he needs to do it in order to consume souls to survive, but how did he come to be with that man, and what was the story between him and Feng, how did they come to be lovers.

However if you’re looking for a little demonic D/s action, it’s got a little bit of a darker edge to it and it was well written, I just wanted a bit more to flesh out the story for me.

Max is looking for the real BDSM deal. He complains to his friend Randy about the lack of kink in his life, so Randy gives him an address and tells him to go there before he gets too desperate. Max gives in and ventures to what he’s expecting to be a club. Instead, he finds a rough, blue-collar drinking establishment where he seems less than welcome. He’s rescued by Adam, a rough, no-nonsense top who shows him that BDSM is still alive and thriving.

Review:

*This review contains spoilers*

This very short piece of BDSM erotica began well. Max is fed up of all the posers at the clubs and longs for a decent BDSM experience. His friend gives him the address of a club and when he arrives there Max thinks he’s made a huge mistake. Instead of leathermen he finds a bunch of flannel clad men drinking beer. He’s about to leave when he’s waylaid by Adam who ends up giving Max the experience he craves and more.

The story was in two halves. The first half takes place in a back room of the club and this part worked pretty well for me. Max is spanked and caned and loves every minute of it. There’s a good intensity to the writing here and I liked the way that the nervous Max gets a thrill out of being caned by a near-stranger.

Then the story moves into the club where Max is tied to a pool table and has sex with the other men in the club. It was at this point that the story worked less well for me. It stopped being realistic and drifted into the realms of a sexual fantasy – sounding good in theory but maybe not in practice. Max was caned and yet when he is laid bottom down on the pool table he barely winces when he should have been in great physical pain. He is then fucked both ends by several men, with double penetration at both ends at one point. Whilst Max still enjoys this in the story, the whole thing just made me wince. I didn’t find it sexy just ouchy and possibly implausible.

The character of Max, whilst promising at the beginning becomes a sex object, describing what is happening to him but without any real emotion attached, other than to express joy at being pounded by several men. Towards the end Max says:

I was sure I was going to be sore in the morning

More like he would have to visit a hospital to have his anus stitched back together.

So, overall whilst this story had a good beginning, and I liked the scene between Max and Adam at the start, the flat characters and the scene on the pool table meant that this one just didn’t work for me. I also wondered where all the other subby men were in the bar but this was never explained, nor did we find out anything about Adam. Maybe if you are into group sex scenes then this one may appeal. It was too far a step for me.

Cody and Jaime from “Pop, Pop, Snap!” are back in this sweet sequel. There isn’t a Guinness World Record for Worst Valentine’s Day, but Cody’s sure that last year, he and his then-boyfriend Keith would have made it in spades.

He’s determined to make this year’s celebration perfect by surprising Jaime with the best homemade truffles ever. It’s a simple plan, but Murphy’s Law seems to have its own ideas…

Review:

I reviewed Pop, Pop, Snap back in Aug. 2011 (wow, so long ago). I enjoyed the relationship between the two main characters, especially with Jaime being the dominant partner, but not really looking the role. This little addition doesn’t add significantly to their story, but it was a nice spicy interlude.

Valentine’s is coming, and Cody is still feeling guilty about choosing the wrong guy, even though he’s corrected that and wants to do something nice for Jaime for Valentine’s. He convinces his friend who is a chef to teach him how to make truffles. It goes pretty well, however he’s running a bit late getting home and then gets distracted by the internet and burns the chocolate. He runs out again to buy more but he can’t find the right type and buys something he hopes will work. Not so much.

When Jaime gets home, he doesn’t appreciates the thought and they use the remaining chocolate which was for dipping them for a little body painting fun, followed by some BDSM Valentine’s sex. The chemistry between the two is off the charts and they have as wide assortment of toys and leather that they use, in this case a Pyrex dildo, blindfold and cuffs. The story is told from Cody’s POV so you don’t get into Jaime’s head much, but you know he loves Cody and they are highly compatible.

If you enjoyed the first book, I think you’ll enjoy this one as well. You certainly don’t have to have read the first story. Enough background is tossed out here to make their history clear, so don’t let that stop you if the subject matter appeals.

Wesley is a college professor with a deep and unhealthy fascination the darker side of things. When he starts writing a book on a series of serial murders, he comes to the attention of some very dangerous people. Jack is sent to silence Wesley, but discovers that he is far more interested in Wesley himself.

When Wesley looks up after his first class of the semester, he notices a very avid, very handsome student who asks all the right questions. When Jack follows him to an isolated study room in the library, it is only the beginning of a journey that will have unexpected consequences for both of them.

Publisher’s Note: This book contains strong elements of erotic horror or what is commonly called “darkfic”.

Review:

I have to admit, after reading the publisher’s note it was with some trepidation that I picked this one up, but the blurb did hook me in. However, in the end the story wasn’t as unpleasantly dark as I’d feared, and there is certainly a strong  “happy for now” , possibly even a faint “happy ever after”, at the end.

The story is mostly told from the point of view of Dr. Wesley Barton, a college professor who teaches courses on the history of crime in Chicago. He’s obsessive about his work, staying up all night looking at grisly crime scene photographs for his research. He also happens to be very young—only ten years older than his students—but unlike them doesn’t appear to have any kind of social life whatsoever.

Like Wesley, the enigmatic Jack Denali is also very youthful in appearance, although he has that handy attribute (for criminals anyway) of a  forgettable face—that is, until he smiles. We are introduced to him when he breaks into Wesley’s empty apartment and starts searching through his stuff looking for reasearch on a series of historical murders Wesley is writing a book about. We discover that this is at the behest of a rather creepy client known to us only as “Easter”. At this early stage Jack also stumbles across Wesley’s secret porn stash, which involves photographs of young men, bound and fearful. It is this discovery that sets the tone for all their future interactions.

The first interaction between the two men is flirtatious, with Jack posing as a student wanting to sit in on Wesley’s classes. However, even in this innocent seeming conversation, Wesley has the disquieting notion that he needs to be careful, as Jack has “teeth”. We soon discover just how sharp these are when Jack corners Wesley in a caged archive cubicle. Jack is predatory and commanding, and Wesley willingly submits, although not without a certain amount of protest.

Those accustomed to reading safe, sane and consensual BDSM might find the sex in this story hard to stomach. It is violent, menacing and rough, with Wesley genuinely fearing for his safety at times (and with good reason considering the kind of man Jack is and what he’s been sent to do). However, although Wesley is never given a safeword, Jack does give him opt outs of a sort, so it remains just on the border with dubious consent. I was in no doubt that Wesley genuinely desired the kind of treatment Jack metes out, but I did find myself wondering why.

The ending wasn’t entirely unexpected and actually rather sweeter than I’d dared hope for, but there were definitely some moments along the way where I feared for Wesley’s safety. This definitely kept me turning the pages quickly. Indeed, my main criticism of this rather intense and dark story is that we find out so little about Jack and Wesley they just didn’t come across as rounded individuals. If you’re just reading for the violent sex or thriller elements then this needn’t be a problem, but it made it rather a stretch to believe there was any chance of a workable relationship developing between these two men.

In summary, avoid if you’re at all squeamish about dubious consent or violent sadomasochism, but those who enjoy a more edgy story will find much to recommend this little tale.
